It is hard to believe the Spring Semester begins in only two more weeks. As we enter into a New Year, students are eager to put their best foot forward, and start their new semester refreshed after the long winter break. While preparing to head back to school, it’s important to get into a good mindset and set intentions for what you hope to accomplish this second half of the school year. Plus, continue reading to find out what made our list of top 5 items you’ll want to bring back for the spring semester.

3 Things you can do to make the most out of the Spring Semester:

  1. Join a Club – The best way to learn more about yourself and figure out your interests is to put yourself out there, and try something different that you wouldn’t typically do. Stepping outside of your comfort zone will be very rewarding, and teach you more than you could imagine. So, join a club and don’t worry if none of your friends want to do it with you. You might be surprised how much you enjoy doing something entirely on your own, and learning more about what interest you.
  1. Exercise Regularly – We can’t stress this one enough, and it’s probably many of your resolutions for the New Year. Start small and remember to take it day by day. The most important part of working out is being consistent. So, if this means incorporating 10-15 minute workouts into your everyday life, that’s perfectly fine. Any amount of movement is better than none, and it will likely lead you to incorporating more and more movement into your daily routine down the road. Daily movement will not only have you feeling better and looking better, but it will keep you thinking better too. Exercise has several benefits on brain health, as they are interconnected components to how humans function and operate. When you feel your best, you will do your best in every other area of your life.
  1. Maintain a Healthy Diet – This goes along with exercising well, and is key to having you feel good. Mental health is a gigantic concern for college-aged students. With social media, the problem only gets worse. Learning ways to combat the stress, anxiety, and depression that many students go though can make all the difference. Exercise and a healthy diet can make a significant impact on one’s mental health and well being. With a selection of unhealthy food options and no parents telling you to eat vegetables, it’s pretty easy to go down a bad path. It’s important to try to balance the foods you’re eating, and try to incorporate some healthier options in your diet when possible.

5 essential items you should add to your Spring Semester packing list.

  1. 2023 Calendar – To start out the new year, and new semester right, you will want to be organized. A calendar will help you prepare for important events, deadlines, and key things coming up that you won’t want to miss. Sticking to writing these down will help you be more on top of things, and less forgetful.
  2. Rain / Snow Boots – Just because the word “Spring” is in the title for the new semester, does not necessarily mean the weather is going to reflect that. If you are new to Fredonia, expect to be used to seeing snow up until April, sometimes even May. Unfortunately, we don’t see too much green grass until the semester is winding down and it becomes closer to Summer Break. So, you’re going to want to make sure you have a solid pair of rain / snow boots to last you through the long, cold, wet, and rainy months ahead.
  3. Rain Coats – Just like you’re going to want to have a good pair of rain boots, you’ll want a good rain jacket to   go with it. Walking into class in a hoodie soaking wet is uncomfortable and will be very cold to sit in. A nice wind resistant and water reflecting rain coat is essential for your rainy day walks to class!
  4. Organizers / Bins – The best way to set yourself up for success this semester is staying organized. Incorporating storage bins, closet, and kitchen organizers can make all the difference.
  5.  Snow Pants AND Summer Clothes – Expect to have several snow days back at school. With the blizzards and storms we’ve been getting this winter, the snow doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon. Make the most of it, and bring back snow pants, gloves, hats, scarves, and more to have a fun snow day outside with your roommates and friends.

Yes, summer clothes and snow pants are combined in the same sentence. Our Spring weather can be very unpredictable… one day it’s snowing and 20 degrees outside, and the next its 60 degrees and sunny. The weather can really feel all over the place, especially in the months of March through May. To be safe, bring a variety of warm winter clothes and lighter, Spring clothes. But remember, you don’t have to go crazy and pack your entire winter, spring, and summer wardrobe. Start by bringing a few essential items and things you think you’ll wear the most. You can always go home or have your parents send you the other items you want when its necessary.

Water Street Square wishes you all the best this Spring Semester!
